First Chart: A slow decline in Boston’s greenhouse gas emissions

The process to arrive on this chart was a bit painful, but it demonstrated to me the benefits of using Tableau over other softwares. I started with a dataset from the City of Boston that detailed greenhouse gas emissions from 2005-2019, broken down by source and sector of the emissions. After spending some time trying to incorporate year, emissions, source, and sector into one graph, I opted to exclude source. I felt the most accurate, digestible way to break the emissions down was by sector. Source made the graphs too complicated. After spending some time playing around with line charts, I went with an area graph. I wanted to display the emissions by sector as parts of a whole, which I feel this graph successfully accomplishes.

Questions:

1) Did emissions continue to trend down in 2020 and 2021?

2) What is causing this slow trend down? Is this a part of the state’s effort to reach net-zero emissions by 2050?

3) Could there be holes in this data, since its being reported to the state by private companies?
